BitGo Brings WisdomTree's Tokenized Treasury Fund Inside Its Walls
BitGo says eligible institutional clients will be able to mint, redeem and custody WisdomTree's WTGXX tokenized Treasury money-market fund directly inside its regulated environment. It's a quiet announcement with a loud implication: the custody layer is where the tokenized cash trade gets decided.
BitGo says eligible institutional clients will be able to mint, redeem and custody WisdomTree's WTGXX tokenized Treasury money-market fund without leaving its regulated digital-asset environment. Small headline. Large implication. The part of this trade that has always been messy isn't the token. It's everything wrapped around the token.
WTGXX holds short-dated US government debt, targets a $1 share price and accrues yield daily on-chain. Until now, an allocator chasing that yield had to stitch together a wallet, a qualified custodian and a transfer agent, then reconcile all three at month-end. Folding mint and redemption into the same venue that already holds the keys collapses three counterparty relationships into one. Here's what matters: operational drag and settlement risk are what keep treasurers on the sidelines, not the coupon.
The category has real weight behind it now. BlackRock's BUIDL launched in March 2024. Franklin's BENJI got there earlier. WisdomTree has been running its own version since 2022, and frankly it gathered assets slower than the ticker suggested it would. BitGo brings distribution and a custody book. WisdomTree brings the registered fund wrapper. Neither side wins this alone, and that's the whole logic of the deal.
My read, and this is a real opinion: custody decides this market. Whoever holds the assets sets the defaults, and defaults are sticky in institutional cash management. So is a tokenized money-market fund that lives inside a custodian's dashboard actually a DeFi product? No. And that's fine. It's a treasury product with better plumbing, and pension committees understand that language a lot faster than they understand a liquidity pool.
The numbers tell the story on the competitive side too. Tokenized Treasury products have pulled in billions in assets, and every custodian now wants that float sitting inside its walls rather than at a rival. From a risk perspective, concentration at the custodian layer is the thing to track, not the token standard.
Watch the eligibility list and the fee schedule next, because "eligible institutional clients" is carrying a lot of weight in that sentence.
