Sony Wants PlayStation Games and Anime Onchain, But There's a Catch
Sony's Soneium just opened a new incubation program aimed at PlayStation games, anime, digital collectibles, and fan communities. It's a smart, low-cost bet on blockchain entertainment, but Sony still hasn't committed to any real PlayStation crypto integration.
JUST IN: Sony's Soneium is taking applications for a new Sony Onchain Entertainment Incubation Program. The target list is very Sony. PlayStation games. Anime. Digital collectibles. Fan communities.
That's a big shift in framing. For two years the crypto crowd has asked when PlayStation would get a wallet. Sony's answer so far has been a polite maybe, delivered through a layer-2 instead of a console.
Soneium is Sony Block Solutions Labs' Ethereum layer-2, built on the OP Stack, with mainnet live since January 2025. The pitch is simple. Builders get support to ship entertainment products onchain. Games, collectibles, fan stuff. Not DeFi yield farms.
Here's the catch, and it's a real one. Sony hasn't announced any specific PlayStation crypto integration. No wallet. No token. No marketplace baked into your PS5. This program is a testing ground, not a product launch.
But it's a smart way to test. PlayStation's network counts over 100 million monthly active users. Anime is a global licensing machine. If even a sliver of that audience wants to own a digital collectible or trade an in-game asset, that's a massive funnel no other chain can match.
My take? Incubation programs are cheap. Sony gets optionality without staking its console brand on a token that could dump 80% in a week. That's the right call for a company with shareholders who hate volatility.
So what's the actual signal here? Sony is building the plumbing before the demand. And it's doing it on its own chain, not someone else's.
Question is whether developers show up. An incubation program with no PlayStations attached is just an Ethereum L2 with a famous parent. Traders are watching closely for the first PlayStation-adjacent drop, because that's when this stops being a press release and starts being a market.
This changes things, slowly. Watch for the first cohort of projects and whether any of them touch a real Sony IP. That's the tell.
