About Aptos
Aptos is a layer-1 blockchain that emerged from Meta's abandoned Diem (formerly Libra) project. Founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, who both worked on Diem at Meta, Aptos launched its mainnet in October 2022. The project brought Meta's years of blockchain research and engineering into the open-source world, including the Move programming language and novel consensus mechanisms.
Like Sui, Aptos uses the Move programming language, but with its own distinct implementation. Move on Aptos focuses on module-based architecture where smart contracts are organized into reusable, composable modules. The Block-STM parallel execution engine lets Aptos process transactions concurrently, automatically detecting conflicts and re-executing only where necessary. This achieves high throughput without requiring developers to explicitly specify which data their transactions will access.
The APT token powers the network through staking, governance, and transaction fees. Validators stake APT to participate in consensus, and delegators can stake with validators to earn rewards. The Aptos governance framework allows the community to propose and vote on protocol changes, with on-chain execution of approved proposals ensuring transparency.
Aptos has focused on building enterprise partnerships and real-world use cases. Notable collaborations include work with Microsoft on AI-blockchain integration, NBCUniversal for digital collectibles, and major financial institutions exploring tokenized assets. The ecosystem includes DeFi protocols like Thala Labs and Liquidswap, along with growing NFT and gaming communities. Aptos's sub-second finality, low transaction costs, and Move's safety features make it attractive for applications that need both performance and reliability.
