About Solana
Solana is a high-performance blockchain platform designed for decentralized applications and crypto-currencies. Founded by Anatoly Yakovenko in 2017 and launched in March 2020, Solana aims to solve the blockchain trilemma of decentralization, security, and scalability without sacrificing any one for the others.
What sets Solana apart is its unique Proof of History (PoH) consensus mechanism, which works alongside Proof of Stake. PoH creates a historical record that proves events occurred at a specific moment in time. This lets the network process thousands of transactions per second with sub-second finality, making it one of the fastest blockchains in the crypto space.
The SOL token powers the network by paying for transaction fees and staking. Because fees on Solana typically cost fractions of a penny, the chain became a popular home for DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and consumer-facing apps. Projects like Jupiter, Raydium, and Magic Eden all run on Solana infrastructure.
Solana's ecosystem has grown rapidly, attracting developers who need high throughput and low costs. The network supports smart contracts written in Rust and C, and its growing developer community continues to push new tools, wallets, and protocols. Despite experiencing network outages in its early years, ongoing upgrades have improved stability and performance significantly.
