About Cardano
Cardano is a third-generation blockchain platform founded by Charles Hoskinson, one of the co-founders of Ethereum. Launched in 2017, Cardano distinguishes itself through a research-driven approach, with its development guided by peer-reviewed academic papers and formal verification methods. The platform aims to provide a more secure and scalable infrastructure for decentralized applications.
The ADA token, named after Ada Lovelace (the 19th-century mathematician often called the first computer programmer), is used for staking, governance, and paying transaction fees on the Cardano network. Cardano uses a proof-of-stake consensus protocol called Ouroboros, which was the first PoS protocol to be mathematically proven secure through academic research.
Cardano's development has followed a deliberate, phased roadmap organized into eras: Byron (foundation), Shelley (decentralization), Goguen (smart contracts), Basho (scaling), and Voltaire (governance). The Goguen era brought smart contract capabilities through Plutus, Cardano's native smart contract language, enabling DeFi and dApp development on the platform.
What makes Cardano different from other smart contract platforms is its emphasis on formal methods and evidence-based development. Every major protocol change goes through academic peer review before implementation. The network also focuses on sustainability and interoperability. With a growing ecosystem of DeFi protocols, NFT projects, and identity solutions, Cardano continues to build toward its vision of a globally accessible financial operating system.
