About Avalanche
Avalanche is a layer-1 blockchain platform launched in September 2020 by Ava Labs, founded by Cornell professor Emin Gun Sirer. It was built to address the scalability limitations of earlier blockchains while maintaining decentralization and security. Avalanche can process over 4,500 transactions per second with sub-second finality, making it one of the fastest smart contract platforms.
What makes Avalanche architecturally unique is its three-chain structure. The Exchange Chain (X-Chain) handles asset creation and trading. The Platform Chain (P-Chain) coordinates validators and manages subnets. The Contract Chain (C-Chain) runs Ethereum-compatible smart contracts. This separation lets each chain optimize for its specific function without bottlenecking the others.
AVAX, the native token, is used for paying transaction fees, staking to secure the network, and as the base unit of account across Avalanche's subnets. Avalanche also burns all transaction fees rather than distributing them to validators, creating a deflationary pressure as network usage grows. Validators earn rewards from newly minted AVAX instead.
Avalanche's subnet architecture allows anyone to launch their own customized blockchain that still inherits Avalanche's security and interoperability. This has attracted enterprise users and gaming companies who want dedicated blockchain environments with custom rules. Major institutions like Deloitte and JPMorgan have explored Avalanche for various financial applications. The growing DeFi ecosystem, anchored by protocols like Trader Joe and Aave, continues to expand the platform's reach.
