Intel Holds Above $100 as Washington's Stake Becomes the Funding Story
Intel traded 2.5% higher near $102.84 late Friday after President Trump said his $5,000 midterm payments to American adults will happen and Commerce Secretary Lutnick pointed to the government's Intel stake as a way to fund them. Washington's cost basis was $20.47 a share.
Intel (INTC) traded 2.5% higher near $102.84 late Friday, extending a run that's kept the chipmaker above $100. The catalyst wasn't a foundry win or a data center headline. It was President Trump repeating that his proposed $5,000 midterm payment to American adults will happen, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick pointing to Washington's Intel stake as part of how you'd pay for it.
The numbers tell the story. The government bought in at $20.47 a share last year. At $102.84, that position is up roughly fivefold on paper, and that paper gain is now being discussed in public as a funding source for direct payments to households. You don't see that every cycle.
Here's what matters: the market is starting to price Intel as a stock with a policy floor under it. Washington owns a piece. Washington talks about that piece. Traders notice, and positioning adjusts.
Is that a durable thesis? Frankly, it's a strange one. A chipmaker's valuation shouldn't hinge on whether a check gets mailed. But flows follow narrative, and the narrative right now says the government has a reason to want INTC higher. That's a bid you can't ignore, even if the reasoning behind it makes you uneasy.
There's a crypto echo here too. Every serious stimulus conversation since 2020 has pulled risk assets higher, and digital assets were the most rate-sensitive trade of that cycle. If those $5,000 checks move from talking point to line item, expect the same reflex bid across crypto and high-beta tech. Same exposure, different tape.
From a risk perspective, the setup cuts both ways. Any headline that muddies the payout story, or any shift in how the stake gets framed, could unwind that premium quickly. Intel's actual business still has to carry the multiple once the politics cool off.
Watch the $100 line. It's held so far, and every session spent above it strengthens the case that this is more than a one-day headline trade. If INTC gives it back, the thesis was narrative. If it builds, the market just told you something about how it prices government ownership.
