Cost Basis

The original price you paid for an asset, including fees.

Definition

The original price you paid for an asset, including fees. Your cost basis determines your taxable gain or loss when you sell. If you bought Bitcoin at $30,000 and sell at $50,000, your cost basis is $30,000 and your taxable gain is $20,000. Multiple purchases create multiple cost basis lots.
