Grayscale Adds BitGo as Second Custodian for Its Hyperliquid Staking ETF
Grayscale has brought BitGo Bank & Trust in to custody part of the HYPE held by its Hyperliquid Staking ETF, per a new SEC filing. It looks like back-office housekeeping, but it shows how quickly altcoin and staking products are getting the same institutional plumbing as Bitcoin funds. And the custodians are the ones cashing in.
Grayscale has added BitGo Bank &. Trust as a second custodian for its Hyperliquid Staking ETF, per a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. BitGo will handle safekeeping for a portion of the trust's HYPE holdings, which means the fund no longer leans on a single regulated institution to hold the underlying tokens.
On paper, that's a technical update. In practice, it's the kind of plumbing that decides whether an altcoin ETF actually works. Staking products carry obligations a plain Bitcoin fund never touches. Someone has to custody the tokens, someone has to account for how those assets interact with network validation, and someone has to manage reward treatment while keeping enough liquidity on hand for redemptions. Two custodians give Grayscale more operational slack, and less concentration risk.
The more interesting part is HYPE itself. Hyperliquid built its name as a crypto-native venue, a decentralized perpetual futures platform where the token was pure on-chain infrastructure. Now that same token sits inside the legal and operational frame that public securities demand. Reading the legislative tea leaves, that's the direction of travel for the whole market, and it's arriving faster than most desks modeled.
The sponsor has been running this play across a widening set of assets since the ETF market moved past Bitcoin and Ethereum. A few years ago, the hard part was finding any regulated custodian willing to hold BTC. Now the industry is assembling staking, administration, and multi-custodian structures around specialized proof-of-stake tokens. That's a different business, and the fee pool is bigger.
Here's my read. The real winners aren't Grayscale or Hyperliquid. It's the custodians. Compliant custody is quietly becoming the best franchise in crypto, and every new staking product hands them another annuity. HYPE's investment case doesn't change on this filing, but the calculus for anyone building the next altcoin ETF just did.
