Bitcoin's 63% HODL Wave Is a Math Trick, Not a Bull Signal
Bitcoin's one-year HODL wave hit 63.3% on Sept. 18, up nearly a full point in a month. But that number climbs by default, and the adjacent age bands tell a very different story about what's actually happening on-chain.
Bitcoin's share of supply that hasn't moved in at least a year hit 63.3% on Sept. 18. That's up 0.98 percentage points from 62.32% on Aug. 18, per Maketo's HODL-wave data. CT is already calling it quiet accumulation. Anon, let me explain why that read is lazy.
HODL waves sort unspent transaction outputs into age bands based on their last on-chain move. When the one-year share climbs, more supply sits in older bands. Sounds bullish. But here's the thing: that threshold is a cliff, not a sentiment gauge. Every single day, coins sitting in the 6-to-12-month bucket age into the 1-year-plus bucket. Nobody bought. Nobody sold. They just crossed a line on a chart.
That's why the adjacent bands matter more than the headline number. In the same month the one-year share rose, the band just below it had to thin out to feed it. Supply didn't get more committed. It got older. And you can't tell a whale who's diamond-handing from a whale who lost a hardware wallet three years ago.
So ask yourself this. If 63% of supply never moves, how much of that's conviction and how much is inertia? Honestly, we don't know. Something like a fifth of all supply hasn't moved in five years or more. Some of that's Satoshi's coins. Some is estate planning. Some is just forgotten.
What actually matters is flow at the edges. Watch the 1-day and 1-week bands. When short-term bands expand, coins are moving and price tends to follow. When they compress, the market is asleep. That's the signal. Not a rolling threshold that ticks up by default while you sleep.
Here's my stance: 63% is a number, not a thesis. If you're aping on a band crossing, you're trading a calendar, not the chain. The chain doesn't lie. The chart you're reading it on absolutely can. Watch the 1-to-3-month band for the next two weeks. If it starts filling in, that's the real move.
