XRP

XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source blockchain built for fast, efficient cross-border payments. Created by Ripple Labs co-founders Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb, XRP was designed to bridge the gap between traditional finance and cryptocurrency by offering near-instant settlement for international money transfers.

Unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, XRP doesn't rely on mining or traditional proof-of-stake. Instead, the XRP Ledger uses a unique consensus protocol where a network of trusted validators agrees on transaction ordering. Transactions settle in 3 to 5 seconds with costs below a fraction of a cent, making XRP one of the fastest and cheapest payment networks available.

Ripple Labs, the company most closely associated with XRP, has built enterprise-grade payment solutions used by banks and financial institutions around the world. RippleNet connects payment providers and banks to move money across borders more efficiently than the traditional SWIFT system. While Ripple and XRP are separate entities, the company holds a significant portion of XRP in escrow.

XRP's journey has included a high-profile legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which brought attention to regulatory questions around digital assets. That case shaped how the crypto industry thinks about token classification. With a total supply capped at 100 billion tokens and a focus on real-world payment use cases, XRP maintains a strong position among the top cryptocurrencies.
