The Price of Luxury on Amtrak's California Zephyr: Is a $2,200 Bedroom Worth It?
Traveling on the California Zephyr offers scenic views, but is splurging on a $2,200 bedroom worth it? We break down the costs, comforts, and compromises of the journey.
travel, comfort is king. But at what cost? I recently embarked on two journeys aboard Amtrak's California Zephyr, each offering a uniquely different experience. One thing’s clear: the price tag of a $2,200 bedroom raises the question, is luxury worth the splurge on a train?
Evidence: The Roomette vs. The Bedroom
There's no denying the allure of the California Zephyr. Stretching over 2,400 miles with breathtaking views of the American West, it's a bucket-list journey for many. In January 2025, I opted for a 15-hour journey from Denver to Salt Lake City in a roomette, which set me back $400. The space was snug, offering 23 square feet with two seats and two beds. It’s intimate, to say the least.
Fast forward to February 2026, I embarked on a full 53-hour journey from Chicago to Emeryville, California, this time in a luxurious bedroom. Priced at $2,200, the room was more than twice the size of the roomette, offering 50 square feet complete with a private bathroom and shower. The added comfort of a couch and additional floor space made the extended duration manageable.
Counterpoint: The Value Debate
Here's the counter. For a trip spanning multiple days, the argument for splurging on a bedroom is compelling. Yet, is it really worth the $2,200 price tag for a single traveler? The roomette, although smaller, provides basic necessities and a shared bathroom, sufficient for shorter trips. Importantly, it’s a more economical option, allowing budget-conscious travelers to experience the same scenic route.
Critics of the upgrade might argue that the extra space and private bathroom aren't worth the steep price, especially when the core experience of the journey, the views, remains unchanged regardless of seating class. It begs the question: does comfort truly justify the cost?
Your Verdict: Comfort vs. Cost
After weighing both experiences, my verdict is split based on travel duration. For journeys under 24 hours, the roomette is the smarter choice. It offers sufficient comfort without breaking the bank. However, for the full 53-hour trek, the bedroom's additional amenities provide a significant boost in comfort, making it worth the additional cost for those who can spare the expense.
Ultimately, the decision rests on what you value more: cost savings or enhanced comfort. The California Zephyr offers a unique opportunity to see America’s heartland in style, and whether that's in a roomette or bedroom, the journey is bound to be memorable.
So, where do you stand? Is the price worth the comfort? Or is it just another unnecessary luxury?
