FRIEND Token Pumps 1,500% on Machi Big Brother's $1M Friend.tech Buyout Offer
Friend.tech's FRIEND token surged over 1,500% after Machi Big Brother offered $1 million to buy the abandoned social app's contracts. Is this a real revival or just a speculative headline trade?
Let's be honest: Friend.tech was supposed to be dead. The web3 social network launched on Base back in 2023 with a lot of hype, then slowly fizzled as its original team walked away and handed over control of the smart contracts about two years ago. But today, FRIEND token is up more than 1,500% off the back of a $1 million buyout offer from Machi Big Brother, the crypto whale known for big swings on NFT and social tokens. That's not a typo. 1,500 percent.
So what's actually going on here? Machi Big Brother, whose real track record includes some memorable bets on everything from BAYC to various Friend.tech keys, posted the proposal to acquire the protocol's social app contracts. The offer is essentially a bid to take over the project's infrastructure and try to revive it. Proponents are already calling this a second life for Friend.tech. Skeptics, and I count myself among them, might ask a different question: what exactly is he buying for $1 million?
The token's price spike tells you more about market dynamics than fundamentals. Low liquidity, a tiny float, and a story that catches attention on crypto Twitter can easily produce a 10x move in hours. Granted, a $1 million offer sounds real, but it's a rounding error for someone like Machi. The question worth asking: does this actually restore the platform's network effects, or is FRIEND just catching a speculative bid while the underlying app remains abandoned?
To be fair, the buyout is more than just a meme. If Machi follows through and actually takes control, he'd get the social graph, existing user data, and the chance to rework the incentives. That's a real option, if not necessarily a good one. History suggests otherwise reviving dead social apps, but I'm not entirely convinced this is a scam. It's just a very expensive experiment.
Time will tell, though the market has already made its statement: FRIEND went from pennies to a serious double-digit price in a single session. What I'm watching now is whether Machi actually delivers the cash and files the necessary contract updates, because a proposal isn't the same as a purchase. Until then, treat this rally as a headline trade, not a revival.
