According to new research presented at the 35th USENIX Security Symposium, facilitators like Coinbase are grappling with flaws that could lead to severe financial repercussions. Researchers scrutinized 15 major facilitators, uncovering widespread violations of security protocols.
The study identified four major threat categories: free shopping, asset theft, service disruption, and gas abuse. Notably, asset theft emerged as a significant risk. Researchers highlighted a flaw involving the ERC-6492 Ethereum signature standard, where malicious actors could exploit facilitators to approve unauthorized asset transfers. And let's not forget the economic fallout of failed transactions. During the analysis period, facilitators spent $202,000 on network fees, with $5,800 burned on transactions that never completed.
But the real kicker? The market is intensely concentrated. Coinbase alone processed 77.17 million transactions, representing the lion's share of the $27 million in payment volume. This concentration means a single failure can ripple through and affect a vast number of merchants. Despite some facilitators starting to address these issues, the patchwork of fixes remains incomplete. For merchants, the risk is clear: releasing services before payment settlement could lead to unclaimed losses.
