OpenAI's $30 Billion Sprint Before Anthropic's IPO
OpenAI is reportedly raising about $30 billion at a valuation above $1.4 trillion, and the timing suggests it wants a price on the board before Anthropic's mid-November listing. The real disclosure, though, will come from Anthropic's filing.
OpenAI is reportedly chasing about $30 billion before Anthropic gets to ring the bell. Two people familiar with the matter told Reuters the ChatGPT maker is in talks to raise that sum at a valuation above $1.4 trillion, with SoftBank, Abu Dhabi's MGX and other existing backers circling the round.
So why the hurry? Anthropic's expected listing lands in mid-November, and a public S-1 does something private rounds can't. It forces disclosure. Revenue, compute spend, burn rate, customer concentration, all of it in black and white for the first time. Whoever files first sets the comparison. And right now, Anthropic looks like it gets there first.
A $30 billion private round priced by SoftBank and Gulf sovereign money gives OpenAI its own number to wave around before that happens. But it's a number set by people already sitting on the cap table. Public shareholders get to argue with valuations. Private backers mostly get to nod along.
That's the part worth sitting with. A $1.4 trillion mark on a private round is a thesis, not a price.
Color me skeptical, but the deeper disclosure will come from Anthropic's filing, not OpenAI's term sheet. A filing has to survive an audit, a roadshow, and a queue of portfolio managers who read every footnote. If Anthropic reports healthy gross margins on enterprise API revenue, the narrative around frontier lab economics gets a lot friendlier. If it shows a business leaning on a handful of oversized contracts, the skeptics get a very loud microphone.
The question worth asking: which of these two actually wants the public market, and which one just wants to be priced before the comparison starts? Time will tell, though the calendar already hints at an answer.
Watch the Anthropic filing date, then watch whether OpenAI's round closes before or after it. That sequence tells you who's setting the price.
