KOSPI's 3.54% Pop Is a Squeeze, Not a Comeback

Korean and Japanese stocks ripped higher Wednesday morning as oil cooled off. But Brent only fell 0.69% and KOSPI is still down 17.14% over the past month. Chip stocks led the bounce. Here's why I'm not buying it yet.
JUST IN: Korean and Japanese equities ripped higher Wednesday morning. KOSPI jumped 3.54%. Nikkei 225 added 1.43%. Chip names did the heavy lifting on both indices.
The official explanation is oil. Crude cooled off, so the thinking goes, and that gave risk assets room to breathe. Sounds tidy. It isn't.
Brent fell just 0.69%. It's still above $100 a barrel. That's not relief, that's a pause in a selloff. If a two-thirds-of-a-percent dip in crude is enough to spark a 3.5% equity melt-up, the move isn't about oil at all.
So what's actually happening? Positioning. Traders were crowded short into a brutal tape, and they grabbed the first excuse in sight to cover. That's a squeeze. Shorts covering isn't the same thing as buyers showing up.
Here's the number that matters. KOSPI is still down 17.14% over the past month, per TradingView. One green morning doesn't erase that. Not even close.
And that's where the chip rally gets shaky. Semiconductor names are bouncing off oversold levels, but the underlying story hasn't changed overnight. Crude above $100 still means higher input costs, tighter margins, and central banks with less room to help. A 0.69% oil dip doesn't fix any of that.
Can the chip rally last? Only if crude actually breaks down from here, and only if the bids are real rather than borrowed. Look, I've seen this movie. The first 3% is always the easy part. The second 3% is where the tape tells you whether it's a bounce or a bottom.
Traders are watching closely for two things now: Brent holding above $100, and whether chip volume follows through on Thursday. If Brent grinds back toward $105, this whole rally unwinds fast.
The market's verdict on Wednesday's big green candle is simple. It's relief, not a recovery. And just like that, the whole thing could be gone by Friday.
