Coinbase Wallet Is Back. The Social Network Idea Isn't.
Coinbase dropped the Base App name and went back to Coinbase Wallet, betting traders care more about perps, prediction markets, and tokenized stocks than they do about a feed. The one-year social experiment is officially dead.
Coinbase just killed its own rebrand. And that's the smartest thing it's done in a year.
JUST IN: the app that's been called Base App since July 2025 is Coinbase Wallet again. One year of trying to turn a self-custody wallet into a social network, undone by a name change and a sharper pitch. That pitch: perps, prediction markets, and tokenized stocks across more than 10 blockchains.
Traders are watching closely. They should be.
What Actually Changed
Let's stack the facts. Coinbase renamed Coinbase Wallet to Base App in July 2025. The plan was to bolt a feed, profiles, and social hooks onto a wallet. That plan died quietly months before the name did. The company just hadn't updated the sign out front.
Now the sign says Coinbase Wallet. The product inside says trading desk. The app points users at 10x bets, event contracts on prediction markets, and tokenized equity, all routed across more than 10 chains. That's a very different business than scroll a feed and hope someone tips you.
Did anyone actually ask for a crypto social network? Coinbase thought so. Users disagreed.
The Case Against
Here's the counterpoint, and it's not weak. Rebrands don't fix products. If users bounced from Base App, they weren't bouncing because of the logo. They bounced because the social features were noise and the trading features were buried.
There's also the everything-app problem. Perps, prediction markets, tokenized stocks, ten chains, one screen. That can be a superpower or a mess. If the interface gets crowded, new users freeze and never come back. And tokenized stocks live in a regulatory gray zone that Coinbase's lawyers know all too well. Prediction markets are already drawing heat from US regulators. One bad headline and the whole feature set gets benched.
Plus Coinbase isn't alone. Robinhood is pushing event contracts. Polymarket owns prediction market mindshare. Every perp DEX on the planet wants the same traders. A name change doesn't win that fight.
My Verdict
Coinbase made the right call. This changes things, even if the market hasn't repriced it yet.
Wallet is the brand people trust. Base is the chain. Blending the two confused everyone, including, apparently, Coinbase. A wallet that trades is a clear story. A wallet that wants to be a social app isn't.
The social bet wasn't just wrong. It was late. Crypto social apps have a graveyard, and Coinbase spent a year and a real brand name digging.
So the rename isn't cosmetic. It's a retreat toward what actually prints money. Fees on perps. Spreads on prediction markets. Tokenized shares if regulators let them breathe.
The market's verdict: the name matters less than the volume. Watch perp volume and prediction market activity over the next two quarters. If those numbers climb, Coinbase was right to walk back the social experiment. If they stay flat, the rebrand was a coat of paint on a problem that runs deeper than a logo.
