CME Lists Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap Futures on October 19: 250 BCH and 10,000 UNI Contracts
CME Group is adding Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures on October 19, with standard contracts of 250 BCH and 10,000 UNI. The Uniswap listing is the real story, because it puts a DeFi governance token inside the same regulated venue that cleared Bitcoin and Ether.
CME Group has a date circled. Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures begin trading on October 19, a launch first disclosed on September 22 and now moving toward the live tape. Contract sizing is specific and worth memorizing. Standard Bitcoin Cash futures carry 250 BCH, with micro contracts at 25 BCH. Uniswap comes in at 10,000 UNI for the standard contract and 1,000 UNI for the micro.
So why does any of this matter? Because futures let a trading desk take price exposure without touching custody of the underlying token. That's the entire product pitch. Firms already running futures books can hedge BCH inventory or express a view on UNI without opening a wallet, wiring collateral to a crypto-native venue, or explaining a new custody arrangement to a compliance officer. And that's the quiet part of institutional adoption, the plumbing rather than the headlines.
But look at the Uniswap piece. A decentralized-finance governance token is now getting a listed derivatives market from the same exchange that lists corn and Treasury futures. That's a signal, and it's a bigger one than the Bitcoin Cash addition. My read is that CME isn't making a statement about DeFi. It's responding to customer demand for risk tools, which is what an exchange does. Still, the practical outcome is that UNI gets treated, in the derivatives market at least, like a commodity rather than a security. That distinction matters, and it's the kind of thing regulators notice eventually.
Don't confuse any of this with an ETF. A listed futures contract doesn't establish demand for a spot product, and it certainly doesn't mean any regulator has signed off on one. Read the attestation, then read it again, and apply the same skepticism here. A target date isn't a clearance letter.
The thing to watch is October 19 itself, and whether CME confirms regulatory clearance before the bell. If UNI futures show real open interest in the first week, the DeFi token argument shifts, and the next wave of asset managers will notice.
