ARK Buys $17M of Coinbase and Circle, Cuts $8M of Bullish
Cathie Wood's team added Coinbase and Circle shares across two trading sessions while crypto equities were sliding, and trimmed about $8 million of Bullish in the same window. The Circle buy is the one worth watching, because stablecoin rails earn fees whether or not anybody feels like trading. Buying into a red tape day is its own kind of statement.
ARK Invest bought crypto stocks through two trading sessions while the rest of the tape bled. Cathie Wood's team picked up Coinbase and Circle shares, about $17 million combined, and cut roughly $8 million of Bullish. Crypto equities were down. ARK added anyway.
Nobody buys into a red day to hedge. That's conviction, and it's a tell about where Wood thinks the revenue sits. Coinbase gives her trading volume and fee income. Circle gives her the stablecoin rails that sit underneath everything else.
Circle is the interesting half of the trade. USDC keeps turning up in places that don't look like crypto at all, remittances, game economies, on-chain payroll for small teams. Digital ownership needs a dollar layer to settle against. Somebody has to sell that layer, and it isn't the flashy side of the market.
Bullish got trimmed, not dumped. Eight million out of a much larger book reads like reweighting more than a verdict. Still, it's an admission that exchange exposure is a crowded trade and Coinbase holds the stronger volume story right now.
Here's the part people miss. ARK publishes its trades daily, so every move gets read like a thesis statement. A buy order during a selloff is a signal you can't fake. The funds can't slip in quietly, and they didn't try to.
The real test is stablecoin supply. If USDC keeps climbing through the next two quarters, Wood just front-ran the boring half of crypto's revenue base. If it stalls, she bought a dip in a sector that's still working out how to charge for usage.
My take: this is a bet on utility over narrative. Coinbase has volume, Circle has float, and Bullish is the one she was willing to shrink. Floor price is a distraction. Watch the utility, then watch USDC supply as the actual scoreboard.
