Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT)

A system's ability to keep functioning correctly even when some participants are acting maliciously or failing.

Definition

A system's ability to keep functioning correctly even when some participants are acting maliciously or failing. The name comes from a classic computer science problem about unreliable generals coordinating an attack. Most blockchain consensus mechanisms are designed to be BFT, typically tolerating up to one-third of nodes being dishonest.
