Zcash's Ironwood Upgrade: A Critical Fix for Counterfeit Concerns

Zcash is gearing up for its Ironwood upgrade, scheduled for late July, with the aim of resolving a significant flaw in its Orchard shielded pool. This vulnerability left the network vulnerable to the risk of unlimited counterfeit ZEC being minted without detection. The Ironwood upgrade will activate at block height 3,417,100 and introduces a replacement shielded pool, enforces more stringent supply controls, and discontinues new payments to the compromised Orchard pool.

The gravity of the flaw can't be overstated. Discovered earlier this year, it allowed attackers to mint counterfeit ZEC without leaving an on-chain trace, courtesy of the zero-knowledge proofs that protect user transactions' confidentiality.
