The losing side is clearer. Pure decentralized finance degens who thought tokenization would funnel real-world assets into DeFi lending pools without friction are going to be disappointed. The credit risk of a private credit token isn't solved by composability. It's solved by underwriting. The collateral risk of a tokenized building isn't managed by a liquidation bot. It's managed by property law, insurance, and a court system. Those aren't code problems.
My Verdict
I'm with Liu on the broad thesis. Tokenization does represent a shift in how value gets created and financed. But the shift is slower and more institutional than the crypto crowd wants to admit.
Fiduciary obligations demand more than conviction. They demand process. And process is what tokenization actually improves. The best use cases over the next five years won't be consumer-facing. They'll be in the back office: collateral management, trade settlement, asset servicing, dividend distributions. The market for tokenized U.S. Treasuries alone could reach $30 billion by the end of 2026 if current growth rates hold. That's not a revolution. That's an evolution with better technology.
The risk-adjusted case remains intact, though position sizing warrants review. Which is to say, the infrastructure companies building the plumbing are safer bets than the issuers promising liquid markets for formerly illiquid assets. And the allocators who treat tokenization as a process upgrade rather than a liquidity unlock will be the ones who survive the correction that's inevitably coming when the next tokenized asset class fails to meet its volume projections.
Before discussing returns, we should discuss the liquidity profile. That advice was true in traditional finance, and it's true here. Tokenization will remake the back office, not the trading floor. Knowing the difference is what separates a successful allocation from a headline.
