Among these, two specific attack vectors account for $15.7 million, or 2.7% of the overall losses, driven by contract-account and externally owned account misuse. Contract-account misuse allows attackers to exploit addresses with no contract code by deploying malicious contracts at predictable locations. Meanwhile, externally owned account misuse involves exposed private keys that let anyone with access drain funds. A shocking 3,472.23 ETH and 465.24 BNB losses were reported from these methods alone, illustrating the ongoing challenges in securing digital assets.
The research employed extensive data mining from over 63,000 GitHub repositories, uncovering more than 16.3 million deduplicated private keys.
