Strive's $500M Buyback Is $215M Bigger Than Its Cash Pile
Strive disclosed an optional $500 million buyback of its SATA preferred stock on Oct. 5, but its cash balance sits at just $284.7 million. No completed repurchases, no dedicated funding source, and dividends are getting trimmed.
Strive just told the market it might spend up to $500 million buying back its own preferred stock. There's one small problem. The Bitcoin treasury company only had $284.7 million in cash as of Oct. 2.
That's a $215.3 million gap. The chain doesn't lie, and neither do SEC filings.
The program, disclosed Oct. 5, covers SATA, Strive's variable-rate perpetual preferred stock. It's optional. Management has full discretion. And here's the thing nobody's saying out loud: there's no dedicated funding source. No completed repurchases either. Zero.
So the cash has to come from somewhere. Either Strive drains its reserve, or it sells Bitcoin, or it raises new capital. Every option has a cost.
Meanwhile the same filing signals dividend trims on those preferred shares. That's the trade. Cut the yield, retire the paper, keep the balance sheet from bleeding. For a company whose entire pitch is stacking sats, paying out dividends is friction. Killing that friction is the point.
But the math is tight. $500 million in buyback authority against $284.7 million in cash. This isn't a buyback. It's a ceiling. A signal. A way to tell SATA holders "we see you, and we'd rather you exit."
Real talk: the flex here's optionality. Strive keeps the option to buy back stock OR ape into more Bitcoin. Those two goals fight each other. Every dollar spent retiring preferred shares is a dollar not spent on BTC.
And Bitcoin treasury companies live and die by their bags. Not their dividend policy.
So which is it? Does Strive defend the preferred holders or double down on the sats? Management hasn't said. The filing gives them room to decide later, which is exactly the point.
What to watch: the next 10-Q. If cash drops and Bitcoin holdings don't rise, you'll know where the money went. And if SATA trades above par after this, the market's telling you the buyback is real.
