OpenAI Left $2 Million on the Table, and the Real Story Isn't Modesty
OpenAI has now declined or ignored two separate $1 million prizes for an AI-authored proof of Navier-Stokes. The money isn't the interesting part. The attribution fight underneath it's.
OpenAI has left $2 million sitting on the table in a matter of weeks, and I'm not buying the humble-genius routine.
The company has been named the winner of Justin Sun's inaugural $1 million mathematics prize. The award was meant to reward an AI-authored proof of the Navier-Stokes equations, the fluid dynamics problem that has frustrated mathematicians for roughly a century. OpenAI's model produced the work. The check went unclaimed. Again.
Weeks earlier, the Clay Mathematics Institute ran into the same wall. Clay has carried a $1 million bounty on Navier-Stokes since it announced its Millennium Prize Problems in 2000. Same problem, same company, same silence.
The Attribution Problem
Here's the detail that actually matters. Two academics say the AI proof drew on their own unpublished research. OpenAI disputes that framing, according to reports, and the claim sits open with no resolution in sight.
So that's the whole thing, isn't it? A model writes a proof, and nobody can cleanly say whose math it's. If the reasoning rests on unpublished human work, then calling the output AI-authored is a stretch. If it doesn't, then OpenAI is walking away from an enormous reputation win for no obvious reason.
Sun, for the record, isn't a shy man. The Tron founder spent $6.2 million on a banana taped to a wall in 2024. He understands exactly what a prize announcement does for attention. OpenAI understands it too, which is what makes the pass interesting rather than incidental.

To be fair, there are boring explanations. Accepting a prize usually means accepting terms, and terms mean lawyers. A check from a crypto founder carries its own reputational arithmetic. And if the proof has a hole in it, cashing a million dollars makes that hole permanent and public.
Granted. Admittedly, I can build that story in about thirty seconds. But it's a story about risk management, not about mathematics, and OpenAI has spent two years telling anyone who'll listen that its models are genuine reasoning engines. You don't get to claim the breakthrough and dodge the receipt.
My Verdict
Publish the proof. That's the ask.
If the model genuinely cracked existence and smoothness for Navier-Stokes, the company should post the full paper, name the humans whose work it built on, and let referees do what referees do. The money is secondary. The attribution record isn't, and that record is what every future AI math claim will be measured against.
The question worth asking is why ambiguity looks cheaper than a receipt. Because right now, refusing the prize reads less like modesty and more like a bet that nobody will dig through the paperwork.
Color me skeptical, but a result that can't survive a prize committee probably can't survive peer review either. Watch two things from here: whether a full version lands on arXiv with a proper authorship list, and whether Clay or Sun's committee formally rules on the claim. Whichever moves first, that's the real announcement.
