Lizzo Revives Chili's Iconic Jingle Amid Legal Controversy
Lizzo fronts Chili's latest campaign, revamping the iconic 'Baby Back Ribs' jingle. But her legal issues could make this a risky move for the brand.
Chili's is banking on nostalgia with a fresh twist, and Lizzo is at the center of it. The singer has taken on the 'Baby Back Ribs' jingle, adding her own flair to the iconic tune that first hit the airwaves in the 1990s. The campaign kicked off on YouTube, showing Lizzo wielding kitchen tongs and playing a rib-inspired flute. She's not just reviving the jingle. she's co-writing and co-producing her own extended version.
While Lizzo's rendition captures the quirky spirit of the original, there's more on the line this time. Her involvement comes just before her fifth studio album drops on June 5. And though she's been a successful face for brands like Absolut and Dove, this collaboration is tinged with risk. In August 2023, Lizzo faced a lawsuit from former backup dancers over alleged workplace issues, casting a shadow over her public persona. Chili's, however, is focusing on her love for the brand and her massive fan base to drive the campaign forward.
At the same time, Chili's isn't just relying on Lizzo to draw in customers. They've recently upgraded their Baby Back Ribs with 50% more meat and a new barbecue sauce, countering the 'shrinkflation' trend seen in the industry. The chain has enjoyed growth, chalking up 20 consecutive quarters of same-store sales increases. But with recent quarters showing a slowdown, this campaign could be a strategic move to keep momentum. Marketing Chief George Felix emphasizes that while catchy ads bring people in, it's the food and service that keep them coming back.
So, will a catchy jingle and meatier ribs be enough to keep Chili's sizzling in the market? Given their recent strategy shifts and Lizzo's involvement, it's a gamble that might just pay off. But they better hope Lizzo's star power outweighs any potential backlash.
