IOG Tells Users to Avoid Its Own YouTube Channel After an AI Hoskinson Deepfake Promised to 'Double Your Wealth'
Input Output Group warned Cardano users off its official YouTube channel after it was hijacked to livestream an AI-manipulated Charles Hoskinson pitching a giveaway scam. The fake video promised to double viewers' wealth, and the fact that it ran on IOG's verified account is the part that should worry holders.
Input Output Group, the engineering firm behind Cardano, told users to stay away from its own YouTube channel. Someone took the account over and started livestreaming an AI-manipulated Charles Hoskinson, the company's founder, promising viewers they could double their wealth.
Giveaway scams are crypto's oldest tax on optimism. The structure is always the same. A real face, a fake livestream, a QR code, and a return that no honest business on earth can pay. What changed is the production quality. AI video makes the pitch look enough like Hoskinson to fool somebody scrolling on a phone at 2 a.m.
What makes this one different is whose account got hit. It wasn't a copycat profile with a swapped letter in the handle. IOG's official channel, the one with the subscriber count and the verified checkmark, was the delivery vehicle. That's a security failure, not a messaging problem. Telling users to avoid your own channel is an admission that you can't control what shows up there.
Hoskinson has fought this fight before. He sued a YouTube impersonator in 2020, back when Musk-branded fake livestreams were pulling real money, and the problem never went away. Platform enforcement tends to arrive after the scam has already collected. Report it, wait, watch the channel come back, then watch it happen to somebody else.
The market angle matters more than the meme. Cardano's holder base skews retail and skews older than the average DeFi crowd. That's exactly the demographic that trusts a face on a livestream. Every successful deepfake heist costs the industry something a security audit can't buy back. Institutional allocators, the ones writing the mandates, price in operational risk. If a top-20 network can't lock down a Google account, that's a line item.
My take is simple. Treat the YouTube channel like a hot wallet. Hardware keys, named custodians, and a public incident report inside 24 hours. Then say plainly who had access. Wall Street is moving. Quietly. It doesn't enjoy finding out a founder's face can be rented for an afternoon.
