About Litecoin
Litecoin is one of the earliest alternative cryptocurrencies, created by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, in October 2011. Often called "the silver to Bitcoin's gold," Litecoin was designed as a faster, lighter version of Bitcoin for everyday transactions. It was one of the first successful forks of the Bitcoin codebase, and it remains one of the most widely adopted cryptocurrencies.
Litecoin shares Bitcoin's fundamental architecture but with key modifications. Block times are 2.5 minutes compared to Bitcoin's 10 minutes, allowing for quicker transaction confirmations. The total supply is capped at 84 million LTC (four times Bitcoin's 21 million). Litecoin also uses the Scrypt hashing algorithm instead of Bitcoin's SHA-256, which originally made it more accessible to individual miners.
Throughout its history, Litecoin has served as a testing ground for technologies later adopted by Bitcoin. It was one of the first major cryptocurrencies to activate Segregated Witness (SegWit) in 2017 and conducted one of the first Lightning Network transactions. This willingness to adopt new features early has earned Litecoin a reputation as an innovation pioneer in the proof-of-work space.
Litecoin's practical focus on payments has led to broad merchant adoption. Payment processors like BitPay and CoinGate support LTC, and thousands of merchants accept it worldwide. The network's low fees and reliable uptime (over 99.9% since launch) make it a practical choice for point-of-sale transactions. Litecoin also underwent MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) integration in 2022, adding optional privacy features for users who want confidential transactions.
