Crypto Market Surges, Short Sellers Hit with $468 Million Liquidation
Crypto market capitalization sees a 4.29% jump, triggering $468 million in short liquidations. As Dogecoin leads, Bitcoin hits $70,000 before a pullback.
In a striking shift, the cryptocurrency market capitalization surged by 4.29% in the last 24 hours, pushing several major coins into positive territory. This rally has rattled bearish traders, resulting in $468.5 million worth of short positions being liquidated. This squeeze reflects a dramatic rebound in investor sentiment, though analysts remain cautious about declaring a full trend reversal.
Dogecoin, the meme coin that often defies expectations, led the charge with a 9.10% increase, outpacing its larger peers. Lido Staked Ether surged by 8.83%, with Ethereum itself climbing 8.75% to confidently retake the $2,000 level. Meanwhile, Bitcoin saw a 4.76% rise, momentarily breaching the $70,000 mark before settling around $68,647. This marks a remarkable recovery for the crypto heavyweight, accounting for roughly 40% of all liquidations, with $194.95 million in short positions being wiped out.
The short liquidation frenzy wasn't limited to Bitcoin. Ethereum saw $203.8 million in total liquidations, with a staggering $175.16 million from short positions. Such figures underscore the volatile dance between market bulls and bears, where positions unwind as prices shift unexpectedly.
Still, caution persists. Analysts from XWIN Research Japan point to a significant drop in Open Interest, signaling a broad deleveraging rather than a genuine resurgence in structural demand. Binance's Fund Flow Ratio also suggests low immediate sell pressure, but it's not indicating reliable accumulation either. This is a market still feeling its way through the noise, where use is suppressed, and short squeezes fuel the rally more than expanding demand.
So, while the market has shown its teeth by shaking out the bears, the question remains: When will the structural demand follow? Watch for shifts in trading volume as a sign of whether this upswing has legs.
